Exhibition Review 1

On monday I had the pleasure of seeing "Disarm" by Pedro Reyes. Disarm was an exhibit of instruments who play themselves. Reyes transforms 6,700 guns confiscated by the Mexican government into 8 working musical instruments that push these objects beyond their originally intended purpose. It was kind of ironic in a way because of the contrast between what the guns were being used for now as opposed to their original intended purpose. It was also ironic in the way how some people claim guns cant discharge themselves but here they were collectively playing music together. It didn't seem like the most popular exhibit there, but I was struck by the construction of the instruments themselves and how everything was put together. I also liked that the work was being shown in a time where there is so much debate about guns right now. It was a breath of fresh air to see people gathering around these musical weapons to simply enjoy the sounds they were producing.
